Need Inspiration? Check Out These Options to Help You Push the Bar

Lacking inspiration for your next photography project? Don’t worry, it happens to the best of photographers. Fortunately, Ted Forbes has been hard at work developing a constant flow of photographic assignments to fulfill the most creative of artists.

If you haven’t stumbled across Forbes’ Youtube channel, The Art of Photography, by this time, you’re missing a true gem of the photographic community. In fact, SLR Lounge has covered several of his videos here. Forbes has been publishing videos for years, offering up his professional experience from introductions to some of the most notable, and lesser known, photographers throughout the industry. Want to learn more about Saul Leiter? Don’t worry, Forbes has you covered. Trying to take a more creative approach to your next project? Forbes has some tips. If The Art of Photography channel isn’t enough, Forbes has posted a plethora of coordinated content to Pinterest, where anyone can find inspiration or aim to remake a classic.

Of course, over the last few months, Forbes has gone to great lengths to challenge his audience to photographic assignments. Now in week nine, he has been receiving hundreds of submissions, many of which bend the traditional rules of photography and may shift the way you think about some of the most standard interpretations of form. Take for instance Forbes’ video on still life that was introduced last week, where, to preface his official challenge, he introduces a number of artists who have been well known in the form of photographic still life.

Although the standard floral tabletop images by none other than William Henry Fox Talbot are showcased, Forbes offers a more comprehensive view of the genre by introducing Irving Penn, commonly known for his images of cigarette butts. Forbes doesn’t let his audience fall into the trap of common form, but instead, encourages everyone to push beyond the status quo and develop work outside the box, so to speak.

By video’s end, Forbes’ audience has a job to do, and it’s obvious across Forbes’ social media accounts that the work is getting done. Tune in each week for a new challenge and follow the rules to have an opportunity to have your own work showcased on his channel.
